Psychological support for living with pain

Persistent pain can affect mood, sleep, relationships, work, activity and quality of life. The emotional and practical impact can become difficult to separate from the physical experience of pain.

Psychological support does not replace medical care, but can help people understand the interaction between pain, stress, mood, behaviour and day-to-day functioning.

Living with pain

Support may focus on coping with the demands of persistent pain, managing stress and frustration, maintaining meaningful activity and responding to changes in work, relationships or lifestyle.

Approach

The aim is to develop practical psychological strategies that support adjustment, functioning and wellbeing alongside appropriate medical care.
